💛 The Yellow Tulip Project 💛
The Yellow Tulip Project is an organization that brings communities together to ‘Smash the Stigma’ around talking about mental health.
The organization was founded by Julia, who, at 15, lost her two best friends to suicide. She had the strength to ask for help and speak out about her own struggles. This led her and her mom to think of a way to create a space and community to destigmatize talking about mental health.
The way they decided to do this, I love so much - in memory of her two best friends, one whose favorite flower was a tulip, and the other's favorite color was yellow. They decided to plant yellow tulips in the fall, and in the spring (after a long winter), the tulips sprout up in what they call Hope Gardens.
They have a map of all the Hope Gardens on their site, and you should check it out to see if there is one near you. They are all over the world now!
If you want to plant one, now is the time to order yellow tulip bulbs! They are available to order until August 1st - and they have community planting gatherings in the fall.
Not only do they have the Hope Gardens, but they also have educational programming available for schools. It starts the conversation about mental health with our youth, which is so important.
I alone can name off on more than one hand someone I know personally who has had a family member or friend battle with mental health and die by suicide.
The numbers are upsetting - which is why it is so important that we talk about it.

Why is this so important to me?
Donating to Maine nonprofits through art has always been a dream of mine!
Random fact - in high school, I started a nonprofit in memory of my brother, Paul, who passed away from cancer. It started as a school project, but I obviously wanted to make it a reality.
The foundation supported families in Maine who had children with long-term or life-threatening illnesses who needed assistance covering costs associated with treatment not covered by health insurance.
Then entered college - a move to NYC - throw in a recession - and unfortunately, we had to make the hard decision to close the foundation. When we closed our doors, we disbursed the remaining funds to other nonprofits in the state.
That is why, from the very start of opening New Meadow Designs, I started creating mini artworks, whose sales would directly benefit nonprofits. Because I know firsthand how hard it is for nonprofits to keep the doors open and continue helping those in need.
Fast-forward to this year, and I really want to ramp up fundraising through my business. I think an art mail club is the perfect way to share art and support more nonprofits in Maine!
